Alpha-GPC is a world-class, naturally-occuring brain nutrient that is most known for its ability to enhance memory and learning when supplemented.
It’s primarily supplemented as a choline supplement since it can significantly raise levels of acetylcholine in the hippocampus.
Acetylcholine regulates attention and various executive functions and is responsible for higher-ordered consciousness and general mental activity.
An Overview of Alpha GPC Benefits
- Significantly raises acetylcholine in the brain1https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0091305791900409
- Greatly enhances a wide variety of memory and executive functions, including working memory, verbal recall, and spatial memory.2https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4536529/
- Modestly raises dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and gaba3www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/232444324www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8726961
- Acutely increases power output and human growth hormone5http://www.jissn.com/content/5/S1/P156https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22673596
Alpha GPC vs CDP Choline
Both Alpha-GPC and CDP-Choline are highly effective nootropics in their own right and are arguably the best cholinergic nootropics available today.
Both of them pair quite well with the racetam family of nootropic compounds. This is because racetams such as oxiracetam primarily work by utilizing choline in the brain.
However, both of alpha-gpc and cdp-choline have distinguishable qualities which help set them apart from each other, and each of them is a capable nootropic in their own right.
Alpha-GPC is in fact the most effective nootropic available today for raising acetylcholine in the brain. In fact, it is even more effective at raising acetylcholine than cdp-choline.7europepmc.org/abstract/med/1428296
It’s extremely effective at improving memory and cognitive functions, and can pair extremely well with choline-depleting racetams such as pramiracetam.
Recent research has indicated it may also cause a short spike of HGH and several neurotransmitters including dopamine and serotonin, however it’s a fairly mild increase and requires a large dose.
In contrast, CDP-Choline is a more well-rounded nootropic that is better suited for overall brain health. While CDP-Choline does provide a notable amount of acetylcholine to the brain, it is more expensive on a cost-per-dose basis.
However, CDP-Choline actually does more than suppy the brain with choline. It boosts several other key neurotransmitters including dopamine and norepinephrine, which can improve motivation, focus, and enhance mood.
Additionally, CDP-Choline provides some significant long-term benefits to cognition and can be thought of as a super nutrient for brain health.
Alpha GPC Side Effects
When it comes to acetylcholine, sometimes less is more. High levels of acetylcholine can cause headache and can cause a “flat” sort of feeling. This is because acetylcholine can dominate other neurotransmitters in the brain and prevent the release of feel good chemicals such as dopamine.
When taking alpha-gpc, it’s advisable to start with smaller doses to prevent these possible side effects. A good starting dose is 300mg once a day. If combined with a racetam such as pramiracetam, more may be needed.
